Overview
Chile’s economy experienced strong growth (forecast of 4.0%) in 2018, the first year of President Sebastian Pinera’s term. High levels of investment, credit growth, and improving labor conditions will sustain economic momentum over the course of 2019. Now, the Pinera administration’s focus will turn to the policy front: Chile’s Congress is currently debating tax and pension reforms. DuckerFrontier believes that Pinera will sign both of these reforms in 2019, even though they will likely be watered down and delayed. Either way, their ultimate passage will result in a recovery of business and consumer confidence that will pave the way for sustainable economic growth after 2019, as well as the political capital necessary to contemplate further structural reforms later in the Pinera presidency.
